Every surgery day starts with a five minute ritual of washing my hands. I share these moments with other members of the surgical team; they are the "water-cooler" conversations of the operating room. Here are a few thoughts, topics, and trends that were on my mind this week @TheScrubSink.
1. US Ski Team: Since 2007 I have been involved with the most talented skiers in our country, providing medical care as part of the pool of volunteer physicians who travel with these athletes around the globe to World Cup and Olympic events, and even training camps. This weekend Lindsey Vonn announced her plans to retire after the alpine World Championships in Are, Sweden this week. She leaves a legacy of dominance, as the most decorated female alpine skier in history. A great short film, The Climb, was made a few years back documenting her return from a revision ACL reconstruction surgery.
In similar fashion, the team has started to publish a series called Patient Notes, offering injured athletes a forum to tell their stories of devastation, and their battle back to competition form.
2. Fyre Festival: It seems like everyone is talking about the two documentaries just released, one on Netflix and one on Hulu, revealing the story behind the highly-publicized failure of the Fyre Festival. Most eye-opening to me was learning about the social media "influencers", who simply by virtue of their network of followers, can generate interest in a product or event like this. Some influencers, including celebrities like Kylie Jenner, earn upwards of $250k to post a single tweet to help promote something.
3. Oaxacan Old-Fashioned: I've been riffing on this cocktail, originally from the NYC institution Death & Co., by mixing in some Ancho Reyes chili liqueur. This stuff absolutely makes it. (I swap 1/2 oz of it for 1/2 oz of tequila). If you like mezcal, and heat, give it a try.
