@TheScrubSink

Every surgery day starts with a five minute ritual of washing my hands. I share these moments with other members of the surgical team; they are the "water-cooler" conversations of the operating room. Here are a few thoughts, topics, and trends that were on my mind this week @TheScrubSink.

1. NYU Medical School to offer full scholarships to every student, regardless of need or merit. The evolving state of healthcare requires recognition that one of the primary barriers to pursuing a career in medicine, is simply the cost itself. We need to encourage the brightest, most creative, and most dedicated students to follow a path towards healthcare, and it is refreshing to see this commitment made by one of the top medical schools in the nation.

2. Peloton Tread. You have no doubt seen the commercials for Peloton and their eponymous bike, a slick "smart" spin bike with integrated power meter and wi-fi enabled video monitor, which allows you to be a virtual participant in spinning classes, on-demand, from your own home. For the past two years, I've been using the app offered by Peloton ($13/month subscription), so I can use my smartphone or tablet to stream their content while I'm riding my own "dumb" spin bike in the garage. As I've shifted towards running recently, I've tried streaming the content over my headphones while running, either outside, or on a treadmill, and have found the music and motivation really help me ramp up the intensity of interval training. I guess I wasn't the only one, because this year they released their own "smart" treadmill, the Tread, and along with it, a slew of new stream-able content designed more for runners. They've covered everything from boot camp workouts, treadmill sessions, to outdoor training for runners, with more on the way. Check it out!
